Abstract
In an operation in 1985, the Islamic combatants succeeded in capturing the coastal city of Faw and prevented the Ba'athist regime of Iraq from having access to the waters of the Persian Gulf. The most important problem after the conquest of Faw was the ability to stabilize and to have effective support, so that the positions in the southern part of Iraq could be maintained. From a military point of view, the forces should have been supported through the Arvand River, which is about one kilometer long and 12 meters wide. For this purpose, the B’esat Bridge, one of the masterworks of the country's defense engineering, was mounted on this river. Due to the importance of design and construction of this structure during the Holy Defense, analytical study for redesigning this type of bridges can be an effective step in understanding the technical dimensions of B’esat Bridge. Moreover, this will help applying such techniques in the future. This study is devoted to investigate the design of B’esat Bridge from a technical point of view. Hence, the structure of the bridge was evaluated on the basis of loading and design procedure using bridge geometry modeling through Sep and Abacus finite element software. The results indicated that, according to the modern regulations and standards, this bridge responds to the determined loads only by changing the connections of some of its components only in detail, and can have a favorable structural behavior.
